Knoll Home Design Showcases Mid-Century Icons

Showcasing the best collection of mid-century modern furnishings under one roof, the west coast flagship of Knoll Home Design Shop is a sprawling two-story location on Robertson near Beverly Boulevard. The modern living office and home enclave was originally pioneered in 1945 by Florence and Hans Knoll, and the newer West Hollywood outpost captures that original groundbreaking essence of design for residential and corporate interiors.

The actual building was designed by LA-based architects Johnston Marklee, in collaboration with Knoll design director Benjamin Pardo, while the interior space was conceived by Barbara Reimelt of the NinetyNineGroup. The shop features iconic contemporary inspiration and palettes for living that is influenced and enhanced by Modernist ideas. While the layout is open, relaxed and grouped into different design vignettes, the contents are museum-worthy  with products by mid-century masters from Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen, Marcel Breuer, Harry Bertoia, Warren Platner -– as well as work by contemporary architects, including David Adjaye, Joseph D’Urso, Piero Lissoni and Frank Gehry – alongside popular Knoll designs now available in the U.S. for the first time.

Even with all of those legendary designs on display, you do not need to make an appointment to visit Knoll. Whether you are just strolling down the street after lunch at a nearby café or a trade professional visiting the design district for a client, you are welcome to visit and peruse the array of leather sofas, marble tables, carpets, art work and accessories at your leisure.

One item that continually draws in the design-conscious crowds, is the best-selling outdoor chaises by Richard Schultz from 1966 which are back in stock this summer in a rainbow of colors. For over 50 years, Schultz’s adjustable lounge chair has been a standout feature on patios, porches, and pools of stylish homes around the world and it’s still in high demand for soaking up the sun.

Made of woven vinyl coated polyester mesh for comfort and style, stainless steel and aluminum are also used in the construction to withstand any weather conditions. According to retail manager, Bella deLeon, this location is the perfect spot to appreciate alfresco living any time of year, “Homeowners and design enthusiasts who value the quality and comfort of outdoor living spaces all year round love our iconic 1996 Collection and are currently buying the chaise lounges.”

Also, for the summer months, it seems the thread of classic redesigns or comebacks of past popular furnishings at Knoll is a mandate. The stunning monochromatic low Butler Table designed in the 1960s with simple clean lines by Florence Knoll’s protégé, Lewis Butler, is now available with light oak or ebonized finish with white and black high gloss laminate tops.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus, Knoll re-introduced the iconic Cesca chair designed by Marcel Breuer with new bar and counter stools, as well as a two-toned upholstery option. Expanding the popular Saarinen Executive Collection, designed by Eero Saarinen, the classic model has been extended with new possibilities in bar and counter height with wooden legs. These popular Cesca and Saarinen styles have been reintroduced and expanded to hit the market just in time for a sundown soiree.
