Gracie was founded in 1898 by Charles R Gracie in New York. He began the business by selling antiques and by the 1920s was importing handpainted Chinese wallpapers. Early clientele included design greats William Haines, Dorothy Draper, and Elsie De Wolfe. Gracie is now run by the 5th and 6th generations: siblings Mike and Jennifer Gracie, and Jenn’s son, Zach Shea. Los Angeles became Gracie’s third market in the mid-1980s at representative showrooms and in 2017 opened a dedicated showroom on Melrose Avenue in the West Hollywood Design District where a mixture of handpainted wallpaper and curated antiques can be seen today.
