That Was Then: The History of Charles & Ray Eames in the West Hollywood Design District

When walking around the West Hollywood Design District, you’ll find yourself stumbling upon plenty of stunning interior design showrooms and high-end fashion boutiques. It is an exciting time to be perusing the district. Despite the treasures you will find inside the stores, some of the real treasures are the buildings themselves.

What was once the Herman Miller Showroom, is now the Domus Design Collection. A whopping 65 year later, the building still stands. More notably this very building was designed by the internationally-acclaimed furniture design team, Charles, and Ray Eames.

This dynamic duo is responsible for groundbreaking contributions in the field of architecture, industrial design, furniture design, manufacturing and the photographic arts. Not to mention the famous “Eames Lounge Chair.”

 

This historic building is a pinnacle for the history of the West Hollywood Design District and it is one of the few preserved structures. Today, the building represents the old and the new by housing some of the most contemporary furniture and home accessories in the Los Angeles.

The Domus Design Collection is one of many showrooms in the WeHo Design District, located on Beverly Blvd and N Robertson Blvd. In the Domus Design Collection’s showroom, you will find some of the most cutting-edge furniture designs in the district! Anywhere from state-of-the-art lighting fixtures to ultra mod glass coffee tables, this showroom holds some unique pieces that can transform any space.

Observing the transcendence of the old and the new is what makes this neighborhood so inspiring. This district is adorned with such antiquity and yet maintains a fresh presence of design. It will leave you wanting to learn even more about each store or restaurant you come across. Try not to let it go unnoticed, the fundamentals of design from the 1950’s are being showcased right beneath your nose!
