4 Ways to Spend ‘El Nino Days’ in the WHDD

Wet weather got you down? While getting around California’s most walkable city on foot may be less desirable, exploring the West Hollywood Design District still holds the same allure. From renowned art galleries to cozy coffee shops, the design district is the perfect locale to enjoy a rainy day in LA.

1. Get Inspired

De Re Gallery, in the West Hollywood Design District

De Re Gallery, in the West Hollywood Design District

While grey clouds and overcast skies are a rarity in LA, it does provide the opportunity to seek inspiration, indoors. The design district boasts 20 art galleries, each uniquely distinct from one another. Visit renowned and established fine art galleries, such as Denenberg Fine Arts and Louis Stern Fine Arts.

To view more recent works of contemporary and emerging artists, check out De Re Gallery‘s Tania Dibbs’ We Were Here exhibit opening January 14th (details here), or make a stop by 101/Exhibit‘s newest exhibition space, opening its doors January 16th with Ian Ingram’s Ash and Oil show (details here).

2. Get Rejuvenated

face-bar

The Face Bar, West Hollywood Design District’s newest business

Brighten your gloomy day with a little self-indulgence at one of the district’s many spas. From the A-list celebrity hot spot Kinara Skin Care Clinic and Spa to the quant and cozy Lulur Day Spa and Ma Masion De Beaute, WHDD offers some of the city’s best urban oases. For those looking for a quick refresh, Skin Laundry and WHDD’s newest business The Face Bar both offer individual facial treatments that will have you out of the door glowing in no time.

3. Get Caffeinated

Verve Melrose, in the West Hollywood Design District

Nothing quite beats drinking a warm cup of gourmet Joe inside a WHDD coffee shop. The influence of design penetrates the neighborhood, and our coffee spots are no exception. Check out Verve Melrose, designed by WHDD’s own Commune Design, and enjoy sustainably-sourced coffee inside the chic, industrial atmosphere. For a quiet work session, we recommend the charming and minimalist The Assembly. Alfred {In The Alley} also packs a punch with its strong brews and bold aesthetic, in addition to its ever-so hip and fit crowd.

4. Get Fit

CycleHouse

Cycle House, in the West Hollywood Design District

Forgo your daily Runyon Canyon hike with Fido in exchange for a high-intensity workout at one of the Los Angeles’ hottest fitness studios. After dropping your pooch off at The Club Beverly Hills, LA’s “members-only country club” for dogs, clip-in at Cycle House for a 30 or 45 minute, high-energy cycle sesh. For a low impact but high-octane workout, head to the beauty-studded Carrie’s Pilates Plus for a try at the reformer. If you’re looking for individualized attention, book an appointment at Rise Movement for private training or an intimate yoga class.

Registry Gifts No One Asks For, But Should

With the advent of wedding season upon us, soon-to-be-married couples are busy finalizing their wedding details and registry. A true specialist in the art of gifting, Liz Solomon of Mayfair House recommends three practical registry gifts that couples rarely ask for, but should.

Did you know that people spend a third of their lives in bed? The most personal space in the home is the master bedroom, especially for new couples, so why not create the best sleep sanctuary possible? In order to achieve a great night’s sleep, there are a few key items I recommend to consider adding to your registry that many don’t consider: a mattress, quality sheets and blackout shades.

1. A New Mattress

Mattress from Custom Comfort Mattress

Mattress from Custom Comfort Mattress

A new couple deserves a mattress that is uniquely and exclusively theirs.  Waking up rested does wonders for a relationship, so take the time and effort to work with a professional establishment that can address both of your comfort preferences.  Plus, a new mattress makes an excellent group-gift registry item.

2. Quality Sheets

Sferra linens and bedding, available at Mayfair House in the West Hollywood Design District

Sferra linens and bedding from Mayfair House

Nothing feels better than getting into a bed adorned with luxurious, quality sheets. Bedding specialist Ben Naples from Mayfair House advises clients to consider more than just thread count: “trust your hand, and most of all, have fun selecting something together as a new couple. Make the space truly yours!” Linens are one of the most popular items that new couples register for, so be sure to add all the components to ensure the perfect slumber.

3. Blackout Drapes/Shades

Blackout shades available at the Shade Store, located in the West Hollywood Design District

Blackout shades from the Shade Store

Sunlight is nature’s alarm clock; it may be welcomed, but not when it disrupts sleep. Add some blackout drapes and shades to your registry to complete the perfect sleep environment, regardless of the time of day.

Whether it’s to get some restorative sleep, or to shut out the rest of the world, these registry gifts from the West Hollywood Design District can help newly weds focus on a wonderful new life together from the comfort of their bed.

“Classicism with a Modern Twist”: Arteriors’ Latest Guest Designer

Recently celebrating their first birthday at their Melrose location in the West Hollywood Design District, Arteriors has proven to be a neighborhood favorite and leading vendor of luxury lighting. Seeking to constantly find innovative ways to create timeless pieces that also appeal to “design lovers with up-to-date sensibilities,” Arteriors’ latest guest designer Windsor Smith does just that with her forty-piece collection debut.

Windsor Smith’s guest designer collection for Arteriors nods to classicism, but also incorporates her own unique and modern twists. She boldly pares down iconic motifs of Greco-Roman detailing to a new simplicity, and then uses finishes reminiscent of Danish Modern. The juxtaposition of the time periods and materials create an appeal that feels both now and timeless.

arteriors-windsor-collection-video

Windsor describes the story behind this collection as “Renaissance girl meets urban boy”…it is about opposites. “I like using feminine and masculine elements, architectural and soft elements, to create a dynamic that I find really intriguing. The Crete Lamp is the perfect example of a feminine laurel form in a masculine, hard metal,” says Windsor.

“Fashion influences my design in a powerful way. I’m really inspired by iconic jewelry pieces. The Athena Sconce is a perfect example of that,” explains Windsor. “It’s very feminine and mystical, it’s both glass and metal and it’s reflective.”

Athena Sconce by Arteriors, available in the West Hollywood Design District

“While the Atlas Sconce is faceted and strong, like a man’s watch bezel.“

Atlas Sconce by Arteriors, available in the West Hollywood Design District

Windsor’s favorite piece in the collection is the Elis Bench.

Elis Bench by Arteriors, available in the West Hollywood Design District

“I love the way the gray suede plays against its geometric form. I think it’s the ideal mix of modern and Renaissance.”

“I wanted a classic line that is also really incredibly sexy, and Arteriors gave me the opportunity to do that. I’m selecting motifs that feel really familiar to us, but at the same time they’re drawing us into the future. My goal is that every piece in this line will be the heirlooms of tomorrow.”

Thea Lamp by Arteriors, available in the West Hollywood Design District

Windsor Smith is the fourth guest designer Arteriors has worked with. We feel that offering another designer’s point of view different from our own helps keep our assortment fresh and pushes us to explore new materials and finishes. For this collection, we gave Windsor the creative freedom to design pieces she’s only imagined. The result is a beautiful collection that is elegant and luxurious, while remaining practical and useable…and as she promised, the heirlooms of tomorrow.

The Windsor Smith for Arteriors collection will be available at Arteriors West Hollywood in May 2015. Stop by the store in the West Hollywood Design District at 8620 Melrose Avenue. For more updates, connect with Arteriors on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

An Elegant take on Five Classic Mother’s Day Gifts

Although one day a year is insufficient in celebrating the important women in our lives, Mother’s Day is still the perfect opportunity to try and convey your appreciation. To help find a unique gift as special as mom, we’ve taken 5 tried and true, quientessential Mother’s Day gifts and given them an elegant spin.

ORGANIC FLOWERS

Instead of opting for grocery store flowers or corporate online services, take the time to give your mother organic florals. Lily Lodge boasts hand-selected, hard-to-find specialty flowers that can be delivered in wood-grained, embossed flowers boxes or arranged in curated, authentic vases.

UNIQUE JEWELRY

One of a kind jewelry pieces serve as a personalized gift that can be as unique as mom. From vintage finds at Platt Boutique to sculptural ones from Gray Gallery, the design district has a plethora of eclectic retailers that can give something mom can cherish forever.

FINE HOUSEWARE

Every woman appreciates a fine piece to add to her home, whether its high-quality linens, porcelain dinnerware or elegant, decorative accents. Mayfair House offers these items and more, along with an exceptional staff that can create a gift that fits the aesthetic and style desired.

BEAUTY TREATMENTS

Rather than booking just one spa treatment for mom, make a day out of it! The district offers a multitude of spas, hair salons, and specialty retailers that can make for a relaxing retreat. Book a spa treatment at the renowned Kinara Spa and hair appointment at GODDARD + BRAGG, both located at 656 Robertson Boulevard, for a full day of beautification.

CHOCOLATE, CAVIAR & CHAMPAGNE

Make mom a gift basket that she’ll never forget. Our recommendations for a luxurious package: A bar of Compartes chocolate from neighborhood favorite Alfred Coffee {In the Alley}, a custom caviar and picnic set from Petrossian, and a rare bottle of champagne from Du Vinn Wine and Spirits.

Top 3 Spots for Easter Brunch

Sunday Brunch is a staple in LA culture. In fact, most weekends are planned around finding the perfect rendezvous for groups to gather, reminisce about the weekend’s happenings and alleviate the worries of the impending workweek.

This Sunday features the Holy Grail (pun intended) of all Sunday Brunches: Easter Brunch, and what better place to gather with your friends and loved ones this Sunday than the chic, effervescent area of the West Hollywood Design District. Enjoy a stress-free day of easily traversed shopping and dining throughout LA’s most coveted neighborhood. Below are just a few of the wonderful Easter Brunch dining selections that the design district has to offer:

1) Cecconi’s, 8764 Melrose Avenue

Cecconi's full MDR and Bar - Amy Murrell

Cecconi’s is a spacious, open-air restaurant, designed with an elegant aesthetic that’s focused around a pristine, cumbersome marble bar that’s swoon-worthy. Indulge in their Easter specials that utilize spring produce, such as the zucchini blossoms, asparagus and stracchino pizza, or eggs with asparagus and truffles.

2) Petrossian, 321 N Robertson Boulevard

Petrossian, located in the West Hollywood Design District

Feeling a bit more ostentatious? No problem. Petrossian has a sophisticated and refined décor that will have you happy you wore your Sunday’s best. Expect an Easter Brunch menu classed up with the finest caviar. Their signature Brunch favorites, such as the smoked salmon bagel with caviar or caviar scrambled eggs, are available along with a $65 three course fixed menu.

3) Tortilla Republic, 616 N Robertson Boulevard

Tortilla Republic, located in the West Hollywood Design District

Family not in town for the holiday? Then try a fun, upbeat Easter Brunch with your friends at Tortilla Republic. They’re open bright and early, at 10am, with $16 bottomless mimosas and an adult Easter Egg hunt, which, to be honest, has me curious enough to visit just for that.

Luxury Living for the Angeleno Lifestyle

If there’s one thing the Design District is known for, it’s luxury; from high fashion retailers to ultra-luxe furniture showrooms, the district has it all. Originated in the early 1970s, the Luxury Living Group sought to create a furniture line that combined visual aesthetics and detail, soon leading them to a collaboration with the fashion brand Fendi. Luxury Living continues to carry out their original mission, bringing the best brands in luxury into their portfolio: Fendi Casa, Bentley Home, Kenzo Maison and Vladimir Kagan New York. The team at Luxury Living Los Angeles shares the details and inspiration for Trussardi Casa, their newest collection, fit for the Angeleno lifestyle.

Trussardi Casa, Luxury Living’s newest collection offers Angelenos a line that embraces every aspect of daily life. Launched in 2014, Trussardi Casa is a made-in-Italy collection intended for young and cosmopolitan consumers, sensitive to the appeal of a minimal, but at the same time well-defined design.

Luxury Living, located in the West Hollywood Design District

Understated motifs and clean lines evoke a fifties mood giving a modern twist through attractive, casual solutions. Furniture designed to naturally and coherently blend in with international ambiances. Trussardi Casa offers a dynamic, Milanese style, true to the understated luxury and effortless elegance typical of the brand of the Greyhound.

Luxury Living, located in the West Hollywood Design District

A selection ranging from sofas, armchairs, tables and accessories – co-designed with Architect Carlo Colombo reflects essential aesthetic rules based on sleek, perfect proportions defined by geometric lines that are never sharp and always inviting.

Luxury Living, located in the West Hollywood Design District

The color palette is inspired by earth hues: warm natural shades ranging from cognac to sand with cocoa, enriched with decorative themes in soft dusty blue blended with light grey.

Perfect for loft living to a home in the hills, the Trussardi Casa collection can now be previewed at Luxury Living’s showroom. The line’s newest pieces which debuted at the IMM Cologne Fair this past January are simply cool where the discreet glamour so typical of Trussardi stands out.

To shop the Trussardi Casa collection or other Luxury Living products, stop by the store in the West Hollywood Design District at 308 N Robertson, or follow them on Pinterest or Youtube.

On the corner of Melrose Avenue and Robertson Boulevard, Cecconi’s serves up modern Venetian cuisine. Not only is the food delectable, but the interior designed by Martin Brudnizki is a beautifully-done, Californian interpretation of Cecconi’s flagship in London. Cecconi’s will pair its regular menu with some special Valentine’s Day dishes for two.

Craig’s, A Modern Throwback

Craig’s has proven to be the restaurant hotspot: as Zagat coined it, “a sure celeb hang.. think Chasen’s for a new generation.” Formerly a Dan Tana’s manager, Craig Susser opened his own American restaurant, perfecting a high-end, comfort food menu that keeps new and loyal customers returning again and again. Celebrating his fourth year in business, Craig shares what his restaurant “is all about,” including some of his favorite, quintessential dishes.

Craig’s – guests would describe it as updated old-school, intimate, clubby, warm. A nightly mixture of regular clientele who are part of the Craig’s family and visitors from around the globe, refined comfort food inspired by familiar favorites, and guests’ culinary cravings executed at an elevated level.

Some restaurants try to educate; some try to push the envelope. Craig Susser and Executive Chef Kursten Kizer (formerly of the Post Ranch Inn) just want you to sit back, relax and enjoy.

Craig’s goal is to provide a memorable dining experience. The restaurant embraces a culture of “yes” – which means satisfying a variety of tastes and dietary parameters from vegan to carnivore. These efforts are reflected in the menu’s range, from retro favorites such pigs-in-a-blanket and meatloaf to cioppino, steaks, and vegan options, such as perennial customer favorite, Craig’s Warm Quinoa Salad.

Replete with a variety of textures and flavors, vegans and carnivores alike agree that this dish is one of substance: quinoa, black rice, sautéed spinach, white beans, kabocha squash, cashews, dried cranberries and hummus.

Craig’s Warm Quinoa Salad

Craig’s Warm Quinoa Salad

One of the most popular dishes offered at Craig’s is Meldman’s Honey Truffle Chicken – a unique take on fried chicken. A boneless chicken breast is battered and fried to golden perfection, perfectly seasoned, and then finished with a generous drizzle of truffle-infused honey. Served with mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach, this dish summarily exemplifies what “elevated comfort food” means at Craig’s.

Meldman’s Honey Truffle Chicken

Craig’s is a favorite place to meet up for a drink and to break bread (the bread basket is irresistible!). For those who just want a quick bite at the bar, Craig’s offers its full menu to bar patrons, where people love to catch up with friends, chat with the friendly bartenders, and satisfy whatever their taste buds are craving. The pizzas at Craig’s are another customer favorite – they will agree, hands down, that the crust is one of the best in town. A favorite, the Mushroom Truffle Pizza, is perfectly crisp, with three different types of cheese, a mixture of caramelized mushrooms, shallots, basil, and a hint of white truffle.

No dinner experience is complete without a homemade libation. Made with George Clooney, Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman’s ever-popular tequila, our Skinny Margarita combines Casamigos Blanco, fresh lime juice, agave nectar and pomegranate juice.

For a variety of dining experiences, follow the advice on the Craig’s restaurant matches: ” Meet me at Craig’s!” Open nightly, stop by the restaurant in the design district at 8826 Melrose Avenue, or follow them on Instagram.

A Look Inside the Hidden Gallery of the Denenbergs

As veteran connoisseurs in the fine art world, Beverly and Stuart Denenberg have spent over a decade turning an architectural landmark, in the West Hollywood Design District, into a private gallery space that the LA Times calls “an artful experience.” The Denenberg Fine Arts Gallery functions as both a home for the Denenbergs and a richly curated exhibition space of antique and contemporary pieces making it a must-visit for all Los Angeles art enthusiasts. Stuart Denenberg gives us an inside look into their story and the diverse range of fine art available for viewing on San Vicente Boulevard.

Denenberg Art Gallery, West Hollywood Design District

When we moved to West Hollywood from San Francisco’s Pacific Heights, and bought a 1960s Modernist, even “brutalist” house on San Vicente, all our Northern California friends protested, “But you’re Victorian people!”

Surprise! The art world is dynamic; context determines a lot about who we are, who we think we are, what we do, and how we feel. The beneficent weather of Beverly’s home town, Los Angeles, the creative energy of West Hollywood, and the love of family brought us here 12 years ago. It has been an increasingly precious perch, and we continue to feather the nest, most recently bringing long neglected landscape planning into focus—watch our space in about two months!

Works of art are microcosms and artifacts—they are places we can go to discover order and ecstasy; and they are the evidence of trips taken by gifted manual laborers whose work product tends to be viewed in galleries and museums.

We surround ourselves with an extraordinarily eclectic array of works of art, from old master drawings to contemporary sculpture, and everything in between—because in truth, there is no “in-between” from the perspective of connoisseurship.  Rather, a seamless historical carpet weaves on. It’s a brash reminder that abrupt shifts—Pop in the 1960s when I was defending figuration (!)—are standard in the field.

Past installation of the work of Robert Beauchamp from the 1960s:

The following works demonstrate the eclecticism and range of the rest of our gallery. On top is a De Lap that is almost purely visual. On the bottom is a Duez that is far more content-rich and culturally significant for the history of science.  Both have such radically different types of aesthetic merit and demonstrate an enormous range of interests we have.

This De Lap is an optical dazzler:

This Duez is a thoughtful portrait of the man who invented Pasteurization, among dozens of other medical and scientific innovations that keep us healthy:

We hope you will discover our hiding place—our oasis of visual and intellectual pleasure.  Although we are only open by appointment—please call—and see what lurks beyond the raked stucco walls of 417 North San Vicente Boulevard in the West Hollywood Design District.

Christopher Guy-Where Modern Royalty Meets Art Deco Glamour

With showrooms in more than 40 cities throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, the luxurious home-furnishings brand Christopher Guy has inspired people with elegant products and creative displays all around the world. Visitors to the West Hollywood Design District can now be dazzled by their new window series, one that summons the nostalgia and glamour of Hollywood’s cinematic golden age, and fuses a variety of authentic movie props with the brand’s iconic furnishings. Here’s a look into their creative process…

“I don’t start from a color palette,” said Marvelli, “I start from a feeling.”

This feeling is what led to the eye-catching displays of Christopher Guy—prop dinner service, ceramic pieces, throw pillows, cigar ashtrays, champagne bottles, flute glasses, etc.—all encased in glass at 8900 Beverly Boulevard, West Hollywood. Alessandro Marvelli is the design genius behind our windows, a man of Movie, TV and Music video production experience, who recently completed work on Gwen Stefani’s latest music video, ‘Baby Don’t Lie.’  Marvelli relocated to Hollywood from his native Italy in 2007 and has worked on some 23 feature films and 140 TV, video and commercial projects.

“Christopher Guy is the opposite of our mass-production, throwaway culture.” Marvelli continues, “Every piece is handcrafted, taking as long as it takes to complete. I met in person with Christopher Guy Harrison, and immediately appreciated his artistic point of view, and the unique opportunity he provided me.  He is re-creating an older ethos – a golden age of quality, excellence and elegance.  This made it easy to stage the windows with studio artifacts representing the best of Hollywood’s highest style.”

progress1

The windows are dressed with props and accessories from the Warner Bros. Property Department. “We have the golden bull’s head from Stanley Kubrick’s Warner Bros film, Eyes Wide Shut,” Marvelli beamed, “and also in gold, the Egyptian Anubis dogs that would have been used in historical epics. Then there are everyday items which help create a film’s mood and tone.”

CG2

The objective and inspiration of these windows was to fascinate the audience through optical power. Instead of the classic in-boxed window display, these designs were made to give our viewers a glance of our large interiors but through a unique visual representation. “One of the main assets of our showroom,” CG Visual Designer Melissa Klink added, “is that we push feelings and emotional reactions into the dream-world. The windows are an example of the essence of CG furnishings, where modern royalty meets Art Deco glamour.”

CG

These intriguing windows will be on display through Spring 2015. We pride ourselves on giving our clients the “CG Experience,” and this addition will make our showroom even more of a destination venue in the West Hollywood Design District. Through decoration and dressing, we have aesthetically brought back an old Hollywood reality feeling inside the “impossible world”.

For more updates and inspiration, connect with Christopher Guy on FacebookInstagram, or Twitter. To see the window display, stop by their store in the West Hollywood Design District at 8900 Beverly Boulavard.

The Finest Shirt, Perfected by Seize sur Vingt

James Jurney, Co-President of the luxurious men’s label Seize sur Vingt, introduces us to their newest shirt model from a design and technical perspective. Not only are their products sleek and finely tailored, each detail is also designed to be indicative of today’s urban professional style. Feast your eyes on the finest shirt born in the West Hollywood Design District.

burgandy-jacket-closeup

Our newest shirt model, internally known as the SV15, is our proudest achievement, our best ever, and we think perhaps the ultimate shirt–one that has been greatly influenced by our experience in West Hollywood.

For our first LA boutique, putting down roots in the West Hollywood Design District was truly an inspired decision. The sense of design permeates everything in the neighborhood; we’re constantly reminded of the role that design plays in all elements of shelter, utility and function. Thoughtful design gives the individual a role in the creative process, to create a world for oneself, to “own” one’s own style. In essence we gain both shelter and plumage in the same moment.

street-scarf-walk-logo

One of the greatest challenges in our approach to design is to thoughtfully incorporate over a century of menswear tradition with modern influences and design cues. Elements of the SoCal lifestyle have been creeping into our design consciousness since 2001, when we introduced our second shirt model, specifically designed shorter to be worn untucked (a novel idea at the time!), and we named this shirt the “LA Tail”. Only then did we give a name to the original longer design: the “NY Tail”.

Strong WeHo/LA influences in the SV15 model include other subtle but significant new features. The most visible is a little tweak we’ve dubbed the “LA Button” to distinguish from the “NY Button”, which is simply a ½” shift up in position of the 2nd button (the “LA”), to put it in the optimal spot for loosening up just a bit, while avoiding a Magnum PI look. NY’ers typically stick with the top button (the “NY”) for a more high-and-tight look. Now all bicoastal types can shift seamlessly at the airport.

pink-shirtshoulder-stripes-jplabel-crop-jp
Other specs of the SV15 read like a menu of the finest selection of details ever know in men’s tailoring, plus some new features. We’ve rejuvenated a rare and difficult technique known as the “manica girata”(meaning “rotated sleeve”), we put 22 stitches per inch in our seams, we craft our shoulders with a “mitered, split yoke” and carefully match all stripes and checks for the strongest visual impact. We even laser-engrave each of our shirt labels, as our shirts are all individually named and number limited editions. The list goes on, too much to summarize here.

For more updates and inspiration, connect with Seize Sur Vingt on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. To try on the SV15 or any of their finely tailored shirts and suits, stop by their store in the West Hollywood Design District at 8618 Melrose Avenue.

Five Kitchen Trends and Tips from Alberto Snaidero

As the grandson of Snaidero’s founder, Rino, Alberto Snaidero is proudly carrying on his family legacy as the operational manager at Snaidero USA. With a worldwide reach, a finger on the pulse of kitchen aesthetic trends, and a keen eye for design, Snaidero shares with us five design tips for your kitchen.

With our roots in Italy, we’re sometimes asked how European kitchen trends translate to other parts of the world. While differences can affect aesthetics, there are still universal trends that simply work because they are functional, beautiful, and time-tested, no matter the space.

We recently discussed kitchen trends that have had a worldwide impact with a collection of architects and designers from around the globe witnessing these trends firsthand. I’ve collected some of their perspectives here, as well as some tips on how to apply these trends to your next design from our own West Hollywood-based design team.

1. Style doesn’t begin and end with White

While an all-white kitchen has been a top kitchen trend for some time, interior designers around the country report that there are homeowners who are going for a bolder palette or at least aren’t afraid to mix things up a bit. Even when the chosen palette is primarily neutral, the use of high gloss lacquer in brighter colors can be a welcome touch.

Our Design Tip:

Even if you don’t have a penchant for dramatic color statements, there are still ways to create a livelier kitchen. For instance, you can pick amica-based lacquer. The mica flakes in the lacquer varnish give the finish color reflections that change depending on how the light hits the surface. You get to stay neutral while bringing more variety to the look of your kitchen.

2. Playing with Contrasts

Whatever the homeowners’ comfort level with color, contrast seems to be a sought-after ingredient and can be accomplished in a variety of ways. Contrast can be created not just through color, but also through the use of different materials or different design styles: wood with concrete, stainless steel with bright lacquers, a reclaimed table as an island with modern cabinetry—the options are endless!

Our Design Tip:

Make sure the contrasting elements don’t clash with but highlight each other. There should be a feeling of harmony even in the presence of contrast.

3. Open Shelving

Open shelving is easily one of the fastest growing kitchen trends right now, regardless of whether you choose to go contemporary, traditional, or anything in between. Whenever you introduce shelves, the objects on display become a part of the design.

Our Design Tip:

While open shelves can break the monotony of a cabinet row and add character to your kitchen, they have to be done right. In fact, this is an element of your design that can easily get out of hand if you try to stuff too much on each shelf or don’t select the right items to display. When that happens, the result is clutter…not design. Maintain a sense of balance and mix up the type of items you put on your shelves.

Snaidero USA Guest Blog Image

4. Fun Countertops and Backsplashes

Countertops and backsplashes can be a way to add in more interesting elements to a more classic style or design. However, some are also taking a completely different direction through the use of mirror backsplashes. Whether antique, tiled, or crisp and clear, mirror is a versatile element that can add light and visually expand spaces.

Our Design Tip:

Try to keep an underlying level of simplicity even when you mix colors and materials. Balance should be your friend. For example, if you choose a very elaborate backsplash, try to keep the countertops minimalistic so that the backsplash can become the visual center of attention.

If you really want to go with a variety of textures and finishes (perhaps even having two different types of countertops), make sure that one element of the design functions as unifier by picking up the color palette or texture of the other elements.

Snaidero USA Guest Blog Image

5. Designing with Light

LED lighting is being largely used, in a variety of ways: as strips under the cabinets, as recessed surround ceiling lights, under the countertops, in the toekicks, and in other unusual places to create design patterns. At the same time, chandeliers and textured pendants are being used to mix things up and add drama to streamlined kitchens.

Our Design Tip:

Plan for your functional, task-oriented lighting first, and then figure out the ambiance and accent lights you can add to complete the design.

How to Create Drama with Wallpaper from Phyllis Morris

The ever talented Jamie Adler, owner of Phyllis Morris, shows us how to create decorative drama and fantasy with wallpaper. Carrying on the colorful legacy of her mother, Adler fully transforms a space with the use of this unexpected addition.

Walls are probably the most underutilized spaces in a home. Many people simply resign to hanging a painting or photos on their walls and “call it a day.” Yet, those who want to make a statement beyond the furniture know walls can create an entirely new mood, shift the energy in a room, make a small space appear bigger, and create a dramatic statement in a relatively economical but oh-so-stylish way. Since the advent of digital printing, more selections of wallpaper and murals than ever before have made their way into the marketplace, so there’s no reason not to consider it for spaces where a bright paint color sufficed before.

Phyllis Morris Vie en Rose Wall Covering

I really love bouquets of rich, red roses and thought it would be wonderful to be surrounded by hedges of them; thus I created the Vie en Rose design for the ultimate floral statement. Just a small amount of this paper’s bright red acts as an accent that can liven up a powder room, a bedroom wall, or even a chic girly boutique – and this classic paper goes a long way visually.

Drama in decorating was a trademark of my mother Phyllis Morris, and she wasn’t shy about going big with wall design. I always suggest to my clients to not to be afraid of even the biggest of patterns for the smallest walls. The play on scale is a great trick to create instant drama.

Phyllis Morris Superstar Wall Covering

Our best-selling SuperStar! wallcovering is drama incarnate with its oversized black and white faces.  This was the first paper in our collection, and it came to fruition quite spontaneously.  I asked my photographer to put a stack of posters on a wall behind a bed in our showroom. Someone soon called asking how much the “wallpaper” was, so we made up a price and then got it printed– that’s really how it all started!

I also took the idea of floating butterflies, and through the use of varying scales, I made our Chanteuse wallcovering a sea of fluttering creatures, some up close and others in the distance for a sense of spatial depth. Walls are a great surface for creating illusions – just think of them as a theatrical backdrop to your lifestyle. The illusion is up to you…and there’s the perfect wallcovering out there ready to transform your world!

Summer Hair Tips from Marco Pelusi

Celebrity hair colorist Marco Pelusi shares with us his inside tips on how to achieve the best summer hair color.

The renowned hair authority recommends a simple trick for all hair colors to help achieve flawless summer hair: go light! Pelusi says a few highlights or lighter pieces can add a shine for brunettes and redheads. Blondes too can accomplish a summer boost by going a shade lighter.

Marco Pelusi Summer Hair Tips

For those of you who like to be on-trend, maybe a “sombre” is what you need — a softened, summer ombre. This style strategically places lighter shades towards the ends of your hair in a natural, blended fashion.

Marco Pelusi Summer Hair Tips

Pelusi also suggest that whether you’re adding just a few highlights or receiving a total hair makeover, it’s imperative to use products that prevent premature color fade and nourish both your hair and scalp. Using a leave-in conditioner will do wonders! Simply apply the leave-in when you step out of the shower before styling– your hair will be left soft and manageable for the rest of the summer.

For more tips and updates from the hair extraordinaire, find Marco Pelusi on Facebook and Twitter, or stop into his studio at 636 N. Robertson Boulevard. Photo Credit: 1, 2

Valentine’s Day Ideas 2014

Hello Boys…Here’s a quick step by step guide on Valentine’s Day ideas for your lovely lady.  And all of these can be found within blocks of each other in the West Hollywood Design District.

#1 Sweet bling is always a good way to start the special day.  Stop by Mayfair House for this LeoBella red heart clutch covered in Swarovski crystals. Each crystal is hand set by a skilled artisan; making each design a true work of art. Swarovski crystals authenticity included. Mayfair House, 8844 Beverly Blvd, (310) 273-1988.

#2 Make a reservation at Kinara for their Valentine’s Day His & Hers spa packages. Champagne and chocolate covered strawberries will be served along with their premium services. Click here for the full menu. Kinara, 656 N Robertson Blvd, (310) 657-9188.

#3 Surprise her with a private dinner for two! Let Bristol Farms on Beverly do the cooking for you with their special Valentine’s Day menu: Choose from heart wellingtons, filet mignon, salmon or portobello & roasted vegetable. Sides include: garlic roasted potatoes, green been almondine, brioche rolls and large chocolate dipped strawberries. Bristol Farms, 9039 Beverly Blvd, (310) 248-2804.

#4 For this last step just sit back and relax. Your girlfriend can handle this appointment at Oliver Tolentino on February 15th. Oliver Tolentino Couture, 9003 Melrose Ave, (310) 858-0555.

We love you boys!
